The town of Lovech was founded over the ruins of a Roman settlement and is one of the oldest and most interesting Bulgarian towns. Lovech lies around 170 kilometres north-east of Sofia. The Osam river runs through the town.
The older part of Lovech (the Varosha area) dates back to the Bulgarian Renaissance period and has been declared a historical and architectural reserve. It lies on both sides of the Hisarya hill and still preserves the narrow cobbled streets and Renaissance-style houses of old times.

Lovech has the only covered bridge in Bulgaria, which stretches over the Osam River. The bridge was originally built by the famous architect Kolyo Fitcheto in 1874 but was burned down in 1925. The present day bridge, which was built in 1931 and renovated in 1981, was designed to reflect the original style.
