Pomorie - Tourist Information

The Bulgarian sea resort of Pomorie is an attractive place for year-round recreation and the treatment of various diseases. The town of Pomorie (about 14,500 inhabitants) is situated on a narrow rocky peninsula, jutting out 3.5 km into the Black Sea, 20 kilometres away from Bourgas and 18 kilometres away from the resort of Sunny Beach.

The town was founded in IV Century B.C., near the salty lake that the ancient Thracians called "sacred" because of its curative abilities. The climate is extremely favourable, with sunshine which amounts to an average of 2,360 hours annually. The average temperature of the air and the water in July is 23 degrees. Alternating winds (breeze) from the sea to the shore and from the shore to the sea rhythmically refresh the air.

In the morning, before sunrise, the the air is rich in ozone and negative ions, ultraviolet rays and iodine, released from the seaweed. Because of the slow cooling of the sea water, the autumn is warm and long. The snowfall is minimal as the snow lasts no more than 5 to 7 days. From the middle of October until the beginning of March the sea keeps the air warm. The average temperature in spring is 14 degrees. The climate allows the resort to be used from early spring until late autumn for sun treatment and sea treatment. It is said that Pomorie curative mud, extracted from the salty lake, is among the best in the world.

Pomorie (until 1934 called Anhialo) has had an interesting and turbulent 25 century history, with the right to cut its own money, an important fortress of the First Bulgarian State, a witness of the battle near Acheloi in 917, pillaged and burnt in 1366. It was the main supplier of sea salt, wine and brandy of the Ottoman Empire.
